Passion is never commonplace and in spite of its engine type, the Quattroporte Diesel’s personality is still unmistakable sporty. This is obvious at first glance, with the massive bonnet leading back from the traditional Maserati oval radiator grille with vertical fillets, inspired by the GranTurismo and other key cars in the marque’s history, dominated by the large chromed Trident badge.

The 2014 Maserati Quattroporte was first introduced to EU crowds back at the Geneva Motor Show 2013. It received its worldwide unveil at the Detroit Autoshow though back in January 2013. Thanks to Maserati Benelux, we got the opportunity to see if this car is really that that much better than the previous generation.

At a time when luxury brands are attempting to grow their appeal by diversifying into the sedan segment, Masearti already have a headstart. The Quattroporte’s heritage extends back 60 years already. The first generation car hit the market back in 1963. Since then, a steady stream of Quattroporte models have left the factory making the 2014 Maserati Quattroporte (hire) a sixth generation model.

This particular Italian renaissance begins this summer with the sixth-generation Quattroporte. Larger than its predecessor, the 2014 Quattroporte measures up in size to the current Audi A8, BMW 7-series, and Mercedes-Benz S-class. The 124.8-inch wheelbase is more than four inches longer than before, and overall length is up to 207.2 inches. Rear-seat ­riders benefit the most, although all occupants will appreciate the 2.5-inch wider body. Despite the supersizing, the Italians claim a 4190-pound base curb weight, which is slightly lighter than the old car. A steel unibody still lies underneath the skin, but the front suspension towers, doors, front fenders, trunklid, and hood are all aluminum. Most of the control-arm front suspension and multilink rear suspension components are also aluminum to shave even more mass.
